A functional family is very important in the upbringing of a child, especially in today's world where stable households seem to be getting out of fashion. While the world is becoming more and more advanced, some mothers and fathers forget the role they have to play in the upbringing of their children. Sadly, this is most times the case when one is dealing with family life in the spotlight.Some celebrities, unfortunately, seemed to be unable to maintain loving and caring relationships with their children. Anthony Hopkins especially had a hard time building a decent relationship with his now 53-year-old, only daughter, Abigail Hopkins. This unfortunate occurrence had been happening from the time his daughter was still in diapers. This situation is a fact that many followers of Mr. Hopkins forget.Admittedly, Abigail was not the only woman Anthony has had trouble sustaining a relationship with. This trend is definitely seen in his past two divorces and his break-up with Martha Stewart.

Anthony Hopkins Has Trouble In His Own Real Life As A Father

Mr. Hopkins is an Oscar-Winning actor, having received six Academy Awards nominations including an Oscar for best actor for his role in 'The Father.' But in his own real-life role as a father, things are not looking good for him. Anthony has not spoken to his only child in about a decade and as if that was not enough, he does not know if he has grandchildren from Abigail.

“It was a painful time in my life and not something I can talk about,” Anthony recently told the New York Post about his estrangement from his daughter. He calls the estrangement from his only daughter 'taboo' as he talks about his regret.

In 1966, he married actress Petronella Barker and Abigail was born two years later. There is not much information about his first marriage, however, the actor has admitted that he is not very good with relationships. The father later turned his back on his ex-wife Petronella Barker and toddler at the time, Abigail, when she was only at the tender age of one.

He has described himself as being 'selfish' and 'not a good husband or father.' Back then, Anthony was well known for his heavy drinking as his acting talent, a skill that translated into his home and affected his family life.

Abigail Did Not Have A Normal Upbringing

It is sad to say that Abigail endured a lot of trauma growing up in a fatherless home. As a result, the teenage Abigail at the time searched for ways to deal with her issues in all the wrong ways. She began to rely on alcohol and other drugs to cope.

“I came very close to killing myself,” Abigail told the Telegraph in 2006 of her teenage years. “It was the worst time I can remember. I totally abused my mind and body [with alcohol and amphetamines]. The root cause was the fact that my father and I had an intermittent relationship when I was young. I was angry and there was a lot of grieving going on.”

In 1991, Abigail tried reaching out to her after she had heard of him winning the Oscar in Dr. Hannibal Lecter in 'Silence of the Lambs.' At the time, she was hoping to rekindle the broken relationship with her father, But it apparently wasn’t enough to erase the past. It had been reported that Abigail “never forgave him for the way he treated her mother,” and “she blamed him for his lack of love and kindness, and she never got over that.”

Anthony Could Not Care Less About His Relationship With Abigail

Not many people could stomach the idea of a parent member being openly heartless to the media about their relationship with their child, but it looks like it does not matter to Mr. Hopkins. His words to the media lately, have definitely not aided him in wanting a decent relationship with his only child at all, because he seems to not care at all.

“You don’t have to like your family,” Hopkins also said in 2018. “Children don’t like their fathers. You don’t have to love each other.” When told that his statements sounded cold and cruel, Hopkins responded, "Well, it is cold. Because Life is Cold."

It is very evident that the relationship between the two is very strenuous, and Mr. Hopkins highlighted that the rejection goes both ways. Although now that Anthony is in his eighties, he still shows no sign of wanting a 'Daddy's Girl."
