Actor and filmmaker Jordan Peele has released his latest horror movie Candyman, a direct sequel to the 1992 film of the same name. Social media has raved about his film. However, what fans and Twitter have not realized is that this is not Peele's film. Although he participated in its screenplay and served as a producer, this film served under the direction of Nia DaCosta.

Users on Twitter have shown love for this film. However, they've also shown anger towards Twitter itself for not crediting DaCosta for her own film. One user even noted in their post that DaCosta is an African American woman, which may have been a jab at the entertainment industry for their known lack of diversity.

DaCosta did not serve as a film producer, but was selected to direct the film in 2018. Candyman was released in theaters under Peele's company Monkeypaw Productions on Aug. 27. It has since earned positive reviews from critics and fans, and holds an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The 2021 Candyman film serves as the sequel to 1992's Candyman, which is about a professor's wife who links the legend of Candyman to a serial killer. The latest film in the series is about a visual artist named Anthony who meets someone that tells him the true story of Candyman. Once he hears this story, Anthony uses the details as inspiration for his work. However, by doing this, he unleashes violence all around him.

Although plans for the sequel began in the early 2000s, it later was delayed following sequel ideas being turned down by studios. However, Peele signed on to the project in 2018, and the rest is history.

The female director has directed one other film, which is 2018s Little Woods, starring Tessa Thompson and Lily James. However, she has directed short films called The Black Girl Dies Last, and Night and Day. She also directed two episodes of the British crime drama Top Boy in 2019.

Unlike DaCosta, Peele has produced all seven of the films he participated in. He was also a credited writer in six of those films, and directed three. His most famous film to this date is Get Out, which he produced, wrote, and directed. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards, with Peele winning for Best Original Screenplay.

Both filmmakers will be busy over the next few months. Peele will star alongside close friend Keegan-Michael Key in the 2021 film Wendell and Wild, and direct the 2022 film Nope starring Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer. DaCosta will direct the upcoming superhero film The Marvels, which will be released in Nov. 2022.

After three release delays, Candyman is out in theaters everywhere. As of this publication, the film has made almost $10 million at the box office. The film is expected to make more than $20 million by the end of the weekend.
