Damian Lewis is a veteran actor whose Hollywood career spans more than two decades. Indeed, he’s become a constant onscreen presence ever since his breakout role in Steven Spielberg’s HBO series Band of Brothers. Since then, Lewis has taken on several other hit TV projects. Not to mention, he’s even scored a Primetime Emmy.

At the same time, Lewis ventured into feature films, ranging from reimagined Shakespeare dramas to Oscar winners. As expected, he’s also worked with several A-listers (Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, Nicole Kidman, and Brad Pitt to name a few) throughout his career.

Damian Lewis Has Made A Name For Himself In Television

After working on Band of Brothers, Lewis went on to join the cast of Showtime’s Homeland several years later. His was a casting that showrunner Alex Gansa had to fight for. At that time, Lewis had only done a couple of series following Band of Brothers. These include the short-lived NBC series Life.

“Alex initially pushed for Damian, but people didn’t see it,” then-president of Fox 21 Television Studios, Bert Salke, told The Hollywood Reporter. “Life, on NBC, had just finished. It wasn’t everyone’s favorite show.” They were also looking to cast a more established actor, such as Ryan Phillippe and Kyle Chandler. They even flew out to see Alessandro Nivola but the actor turned the show down.

Luckily, Gansa remembered a little-known film that Lewis had starred in called Keane. That’s how the actor finally managed to convince everyone that he was the right man to play prisoner of war/mole Nicholas Brody. His performance in the series would go on to win Lewis his first Emmy.

Later on, Lewis was also cast in the Showtime drama Billions. And as it turns out, it took some time for co-creators Brian Koppelman and David Levien to land him.

“David Nevins at Showtime made the first call to Damian, whom we did not know, but greatly admired,” they revealed while speaking with Fandom. “Then we had many Skype calls with him, talking about the script, the character, the world of hedge funds (he knew a lot about the London financial scene) and we filled him in on the US landscape…” The actor later committed to the series after meeting with Koppelman and Levien in New York.

Over the years, Lewis had also starred in several incredible films. And in fact, he even appears briefly in Quentin Tarantino’s most recent hit Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood where he portrays '60s actor Steve McQueen. It was a role that he didn’t even have to audition for, despite Tarantino's reputation for being difficult to work with.

“‘Look, I'm doing this movie…Steve McQueen's in it, man…and I've just always thought, man, that you'd be a great Steve McQueen…and will you come and do my movie?’” Lewis recalled his phone conversation with Tarantino during an interview with GQ.

Lewis loved the role but later realized that he had hair issues with it. “I just felt a bit like, basically, if Jon Bon Jovi was playing Robert Redford who was trying to play Steve McQueen—that's sort of who I looked like. And it didn't feel quite Steve McQueen enough,” the actor explained. “It was too straight-flowing, and it just looked a bit sort of '80s soft rock.”

After some adjustments to the wig, Lewis felt much better, especially when people said that he looked like McQueen.

With all the work that’s he’s done so far, Lewis’ net worth is currently estimated to be between $15 and $25 million. During his time on Billions, the actor was reportedly paid around $250,000 per episode. It is also believed that Lewis received around the same figure during his time in Homeland.

And while his Billions salary has been quite impressive, Lewis still didn’t see any good reason to remain on the show. “It’s difficult to keep mining, creatively,” the actor explained of his character while speaking with The New York Times. Lewis also admitted that he wanted to spend more time in London following the recent passing of his late wife, Harry Potter actress Helen McCrory.

That said, Lewis’ fans may also be happy to know that the actor has a future project in the works. He recently closed a deal to star and produce the upcoming mini-series A Spy Among Friends. Lewis had recently launched his own production company, Rookery Productions. Meanwhile, the cast also includes Guy Pearce and is set to film in London.

“I’m excited to be producing and starring in A Spy Among Friends,” Lewis said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s been a fantastic creative process developing Spy and now I can’t wait to start filming with Guy and all the other brilliant actors who’ve happily agreed to join us.”
