Sam Asghari has filed for divorce from Britney Spears after only 14 months of marriage, prompting further speculation about what his intentions have been with the pop star.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Sam was the one to filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the cause. He’s requesting that Britney pay spousal support as well as his legal fees.

The divorce filing comes only days after reports say the long-time couple were headed towards a break-up. “Britney and Sam have their ups and downs, but nobody can deny they love each other very much,” a source told Us Weekly at the end of June. Even though the insider said the pair were “determined to make their marriage work,” it seems like Sam has thrown in the towel.

Neither Britney nor Sam have directly commented on their divorce, but the surprise news has renewed speculation about Sam’s intentions amongst fans.

The fitness trainer has long been accused of being with the singer mainly for her wealth and notoriety. Sam has spoken about wanting his own entertainment career to take off, so being married to one of the biggest pop stars in the world makes sense for the publicity and resources.

"My priorities in life are to remain humble and understand where I came from and where I'm going," Sam told Forbes in 2021. "I want to take my career to the next step when it comes to acting.”

During the same interview, Sam said he was looking forward to becoming a “young dad.” The same year, Britney announced a pregnancy only to miscarry a few weeks later.

Last November, it was announced Sam is joining the cast of Lioness, a new Paramount+ show following a group of CIA agent. The former back-up dancer also makes an income as a fitness trainer thank to his online platform in additional to modeling and social media collabs.

Though Sam has a net worth of $5 million, this pales in comparison to Britney’s $60 million fortune – and much of Sam’s wealth has been amassed since getting with Britney in 2016, since he’s gained a lot of notoriety (and social followers) from their romance.

Sam and Britney signed a prenup before their 2022 wedding – Sam even addressed speculation before they tied the knot, confirming they were indeed going to sign one.

But there was a lot of controversy around the subject, including allegations that Sam’s demands were delaying the prenup and that Britney had little interest in being directly involved in negotiations. This only further fuelled rumors that Sam is with Britney more so for her wealth than anything else.

According to a new report by The Sun, Sam is demanding “more money” from his estranged wife in return for not spilling detail of her personal life to the public.

It’s unclear what the pair’s prenup entitles Sam to, but considering he requested spousal support in his divorce filing, he seems confident that he’s going to walk away with some money.
