The 2000s was the era of iconic celebrity duos. There's Madonna's now-estranged friendship with Gwyneth Paltrow and apparently, Emma Stone and Taylor Swift. Long before the Bad Blood squad, the La La Land star and the Cardigan singer were BFFs who frequented red carpet events together... until they didn't in a 2015 event where they were both invited. Here's what really happened to their friendship.

How Did Taylor Swift And Emma Stone Meet?
The pair first met in 2008 during Hollywood Life's Young Hollywood Awards. They were also online friends before becoming besties in real life. "We met at the Young Hollywood Awards for Hollywood Life magazine," Stone recounted. "We met there three years ago, and then I listened to some of her music, and I wrote her an e-mail saying I liked her music, I swear. And then we started talking and hanging out." Public sightings of them together started in December 2009. They were spotted at a Baskin-Robbins in New York City.
"She has such a sick sense of humor," Stone said of Swift in 2010. "Nobody knows that. She's so great. People are seeing it more now, and she's so funny and she's exactly who you think she is, and I love that." The same year, the two made their red carpet debut at the L.A. premiere of Easy A. The Dear John singer also had nice things to say about the Cruella star. "My friends are amazing and I'm so thankful to have them, [but] the ones that are like sisters to me are Selena Gomez and Emma Stone," Swift told OK Magazine in 2011.
She added that the two knew her best. "They can predict my thoughts," the singer continued. "I've known them for so long it's really cool to have friends that are that close." Gomez also once considered Stone as one of her role models. The Monte Carlo star previously expressed her admiration for Stone's venture into "really great, fun roles, but also roles that display her talent." When asked about Gomez's comments, the Oscar-winner blushed and said it was "very sweet."

How Close Were Taylor Swift And Emma Stone?
The two were so close that Stone had the privilege of hearing Swift's album, Speak Now before its official release. "I was lucky enough to hear it pretty early on, so it's so exciting for it to be out and own the songs instead of just be singing them [in my head]," the actress told MTV in 2011. Around that time, the All Too Well hitmaker revealed that Stone was the first person she'd call after a breakup. "I'm definitely a girl's girl. I need to tell my friends everything I'm going through," Swift said in 2012. "Like we have these big group texts. One of us is in New York, one of us is in LA, one of us is in Nashville or Paris or something like that, but we always keep in touch."
She added that though they'd been busy with their own careers, they never stopped looking after each other. "Emma and Selena and I, so many things in our lives has changed over the last couple years, but our friendship has stayed the same," shared the 11-time Grammy winner. In 2014, Stone and her then-boyfriend Andrew Garfield celebrated the Fourth of July with Swift and her other squad members, including Lena Dunham and Jaime King. In December that year, the singer also went to see Stone's Broadway show, Cabaret.

Are Taylor Swift And Emma Stone Still Friends?
In February 2015, fans found it weird that the pair weren't photographed together during Saturday Night Live's 40th anniversary special in New York. Six months later, a lot of celebrities went to see the L.A. leg of Swift's 1989 world tour. They even did a little catwalk onstage. Stone wasn't spotted in the bunch. However, she was seen by the soundboards at one of the singer's shows. In November 2015, fans started to realize why the two stopped hanging out — the Aloha actress had joined a new squad...
Paparazzi caught her having dinner with Adele and Jennifer Lawrence. In February 2016, Stone and J-Law were spotted at Adele's concert in L.A. The former besties didn't seem to be feuding, though. Everyone assumed they just drifted apart as their careers evolved. But in 2019, Heat claimed that the two were having a "bridal battle." At that time, Stone had just gotten engaged to her current husband, SNL director Dave McCary while Swift was reportedly getting serious with Joe Alwyn.
"Emma and Taylor have both said they'd like to get married next year, which means they've suddenly found themselves at war over planning their weddings," a source said. "Taylor got wind that Emma had sent out a few early invites to some of their mutual celebrity friends, and it immediately triggered her into speeding things up with her own plans. As she and Joe have been together longer, Taylor feels that it's her who should get married first. But at the moment, in terms of planning and making decisions, Emma seems to be way ahead." The story was later debunked by Gossip Cop. Maybe the two just grew apart.
